Video Converter changes a video's container and codecs entirely in your browser. Drop in an MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, FLV, WMV, M4V or TS file and get back MP4 (H.264 + AAC), WebM (VP9 + Opus), MKV, AVI, MOV or an animated GIF — nothing is uploaded, and the file never leaves your device.
The encoder is ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (ffmpeg.wasm), the same engine behind the Compress Video and Video to Audio tools. Before converting you can scale the output to 1080p, 720p or 480p, pick a High / Medium / Low quality preset, keep, re-encode or strip the audio track, and trim to a start and end time. While it runs you see the percentage, encoding speed and an estimated time remaining, and you can cancel at any point.
Why this runs on your device
Video is the file type people are least happy to hand to a stranger's server: it is large, slow to upload, and often personal — a phone recording of your kids, a screen capture of an internal dashboard, a clip from a client shoot under NDA. Hosted converters also tend to queue you, cap the file size, or watermark the free tier. Here the conversion starts the instant you press Convert, there is no upload at all, and the only limit is your own machine's memory and patience.

- It is slow compared with a desktop encoder. ffmpeg.wasm runs on a single thread without hardware acceleration, so H.264 typically encodes at a fraction of real time and VP9 (WebM) is slower still. Long or high-resolution clips can take many minutes; the ETA readout is there so you can decide whether to wait.
- Files are capped at 500 MB and the whole input plus the output must fit in the tab's memory. Very large sources can fail with an out-of-memory error instead of finishing.
- Every conversion re-encodes the video, even when the source codec already matches the target container, so there is a small generation loss and no true lossless remux mode.
- MKV, AVI and some source formats (FLV, WMV, TS) cannot be previewed by the browser's video player. The conversion still works; you just download the result instead of watching it in the page.
