That last part is the sharpest difference. remove.bg's free preview is capped at up to 0.25 megapixels — roughly a 500 by 500 image. Full resolution, up to 50 megapixels, costs a credit per image. Ours is full resolution for nothing.

And here is the part that costs us: their cutout is better at the edge. Ours segments at a fixed 1024 by 1024 internally and scales the mask back up, so hair, fur and anything semi-transparent comes back rough. If the cutout is going in front of a client, that matters more than the price.

Where remove.bg is genuinely better

  • Edge quality, which is the entire job. Our model segments at a fixed 1024 by 1024 and the mask is upscaled to fit your photo, so a strand of hair that is two pixels wide in the real image is a fraction of a pixel in the mask and simply disappears. This is architectural, not a tuning problem — sending us a 24-megapixel photo does not help, because the model never sees those pixels. remove.bg's paid pipeline works up to 50 megapixels.
  • Alpha as a first-class output. Their ZIP option hands back a colour image plus a separate grayscale alpha matte, which is what you want if the cutout is going into a compositing step rather than straight onto a white page. We return one flattened transparent PNG and nothing else.
  • Output formats. PNG, JPG and WebP, at up to 50 megapixels for the formats that support it. We emit PNG only.
  • Bulk. They describe processing up to 500 images per minute. Ours does one at a time, on the main thread, with a progress bar that sits at zero and no way to cancel — a folder of photos is genuinely painful.

Which one should you use?

Use ours when you want a full-resolution cutout for free and the subject has a clean silhouette: a product on a table, a car, a shoe, a person in a coat photographed against a plain wall. You will get your image back at its own size instead of a 0.25-megapixel preview, and the photo never leaves your machine.

Pay remove.bg when the subject has hair, fur, netting, glass, or motion blur, or when the cutout is client work. Our edge on those subjects is visibly rough and no amount of resolution on your end will fix it, because the model does not see it.

Also pay them if there is a folder of images rather than one image. Ours will process them one at a time, on the main thread, with a progress bar that does not move.
